I only started enforcing that rule after paying for the mistake myself. In 2023 we approved a catalytic converter replacement because the scanner said P0420 and the shop was confident. The warning returned within a month. A proper test showed the upstream oxygen sensor was slow. Replacing the sensor cleared the code.
