How to Tell If a Catalytic Converter Is Bad (And Why We Switched to Brembo)

It started with a check engine light on our logistics truck, a 2018 Ford F-150. Actually, it wasn’t the light that bothered me—it was what the mechanic said next: “The catalytic converter is dead. That’ll be $2,400.”

Now, I’m not a mechanic. I’m the office administrator at a 200-person manufacturing company, responsible for purchasing everything from printer paper to brake parts. I asked the mechanic to double-check the cooling system. Turned out the radiator cap they installed was bad—it wasn’t holding pressure. A bad radiator cap can cause coolant to boil and escape, which leads to overheating. And overheating can, in turn, destroy a catalytic converter. The sequence was: bad cap → overheating → overheated catalyst → P0420.

I still kick myself for not verifying that earlier. If I’d checked the cap before accepting the flush, we might have avoided a $2,400 converter. That’s a lesson I’m still working through.

But the data was clear: after replacing the cap and clearing the code, P0420 came back. The converter was genuinely damaged. So we replaced it with an EPA-compliant unit and confirmed the supplier’s CARB documentation. It wasn’t the cheapest option, but I didn’t want warranty headaches later.

Why we upgraded to Brembo

While the truck was in the shop, our fleet manager mentioned that the brakes felt weak when towing. He asked if we could upgrade at the same time. I wasn’t going to say no.

So what would I tell another buyer? First, verify the root cause before approving a big repair. The fault code was right, but it was only half the story. My gut pushed me to ask more questions, and that saved us from replacing a converter when the real culprit was a $15 cap.

Second, quality parts matter. Brembo brakes aren’t cheap, but the reduction in brake fade for our towing setup is real. As a buyer, I’m not looking for the lowest price.
