The Switch: Why I Chose a Multi-Process Approach
After that debacle, I completely overhauled our procurement process. Our policy now requires quotes from at least three vendors, but more importantly: I started evaluating suppliers based on process capability, not just price.
That's when I found a supplier that could handle the entire metal forming chain in-house: stamping, forging, extrusion, CNC machining, and die/mold design. In my experience, multi-process capability reduces communication errors and eliminates finger-pointing when something goes wrong.
For our next project—a complex structural part with both stamped and forged sections—we worked with a company that designed the progressive die, forged the blank, stamped the final shape, and CNC'd the mounting holes. All under one roof.
The unit cost was 15% higher than our "cheapest" quote. But the tooling cost was 8% lower, and we eliminated two separate vendor handoffs.
The Satisfaction of Getting It Right
There's something satisfying about a perfectly executed first run. After all the stress of the failed die, seeing the parts come off the line at spec—flat, no burrs, within dimensional limits—that's the payoff.
The best part: when the customer's quality team audited our line, they asked, 'Who made your dies? These are way cleaner than the competition's.'
What I Learned (The Hard Way)
I should add that I still use smaller vendors for simple parts. But for complex, high-volume stampings—especially progressive dies—I now look for three things:
- In-house die design. If you're buying the die from a third party and stamping at another, you're multiplying risk.
- Multi-process capability. Stamping alone is fine for simple work. For complex parts, forging + stamping + CNC is better.
- Clear warranty terms. I now require a 12-month die warranty with documented maintenance schedules.
—or rather, 18 months if the die runs more than 500,000 cycles per year. But that's a detail.
